NOW WE'RE GETTING NOSY. TELL ME ABOUT YOUR FAMILY.
The King has a small, but rather close-knit family. He has been married to his wife, the Queen, for some time now and together they have three children; two daughters and one son. His eldest daughter is twenty eight years old and is engaged, whilst his youngest daughter is two years younger. His son, the heir apparent to the throne of Thivea, is twenty two years old and in training to take the throne. Balduin's father, Balduin VIII, was the King of Thivea before him but died in battle against Ethaia, and his mother died of heart failure a year or so later. It was the influence of his father that Balduin has tried to oppose, for his father was something of a warlord who sought nothing more than violence and bloodshed.
SOUNDS INTERESTING. OKAY. NOW, JUST TELL ME EVERYTHING ABOUT YOUR PAST.
Balduin Alexandros, ninth of that line, was born in the capital of Thivea on the thirty first of January. His mother Christianna was a pleasant enough woman, but was always fearful of her husband, King Balduin Alexandros VIII. A man with a horrid love of war and an odd fascination with blood, Balduin VIII was determined to see a victorious end to the war with the complete and utter destruction of Ethaia and the slaughter of all who lived there, whether innocent or military. So busy was he waging his war that Balduin IX was left in the care of his mother, and no better a caretaker could he have.
From his mother he learnt traits he would never learn from his father. Kindness, compassion, wisdom, patience and many other things. His education at the home of the royals was a lovely one, though he came to despise the times when his father would return home. All his father did was tell tales of the war and of the many citizens he had killed, and when he had lost a battle his father would come home in an absolute rage. It was these times when Balduin and his mother would do their best to stay out of his way, for fear of the physical violence that might befall them.
It was at the age of five that Christianna, in an attempt to both appease her husband and keep her son safe, had him enrolled at the Thivean Training Academy. Here she hoped her son would learn the necessary skills to become a successful dragon rider, and indeed he would remain at the top of his classes as he was taught by some of the finest mentors in all Thivea. It was during this period that his affinity for magic came to light, and he began training these abilities during his time at the academy. As a top student he would advance much quicker than other students, which his mentors considered a possible result of his entire family having been riders.
In the academy proper Balduin continued his training, but it was at this point that he discovered his father had died in battle with Ethaia. Despite being so young Balduin IX was crowned King of Thivea, and his nation was led by a regent - his uncle - whilst he continued his training. His magical abilities continued to develop and he struggled to contain a sudden thirst to begin using them for everything and anything he could think of. He was able to get this lust under control thanks to wise words from his mother and when he completed his training his life took a different course to that of the other students. Where the other students had to choose their dragons, Balduin's had already been chosen for him.
Sibil, an Antiqua dragon, had long served as the dragon for the members of the Balduin family. Whereas his father had ridden the creature into battle, the dragon had survived the assault that had taken his father's life. Balduin held no resentment to Sibil, for he had no real love of his father, but he did expect the dragon to be loyal to him immediately; loyalty was something Balduin IX was big on despite being barely out of his teenage years. He spent a year in solitude with Sibil getting to know the dragon and earning its trust, and honing skills that he felt would be necessary if he was to ride Sibil. The two forged an extremely close bond, with the Antiqua dragon pleased with the personality of his new rider.
When the two came out of seclusion it was to lead the forces of Thivea in battle against invading Ethaian forces. It came as a surprise to all to see the great golden dragon that many had become so used to seeing flying once more, with an impressive youth clad in white armour upon his back wielding a sword. On Sibil he slew many foes and drew off the invading forces, but he refused to kill the prisoners as his father had. Instead he fed them and clothed them if their clothes were ripped, and provided them with safe passage back to their lands. It was surprising, but it was not a move that would broker peace between the two nations. Instead the war would continue unabated between the two.
As a side note, Balduin married his wife, who became Queen, at the age of twenty one upon learning that she was pregnant. This was not his only reason for marrying her of course; he does truly love his wife. Subsequent children would find their father to be strict but fair, generous but attempting to instill a feeling of self-worth by accomplishment in his children.
When Balduin was twenty six he was seriously wounded in battle with the Ethaians. Riding atop Sibil, he came across an enemy dragon rider who seemed extremely skilled; more skilled than many Balduin had come across. Distracted, he found himself unprepared to defend himself against the breath of the dragon. Only the timely intervention of Sibil, with numerous protective spells, that saved Balduin's life. Even so the ruler of Thivea was extremely burnt, his body becoming nothing more than a mass of burnt flesh and exposed bone in places. Though the forces of Thivea won the battle it was without Balduin's leadership, for Sibil flew him back to the capital immediately.
There Balduin underwent both extensive surgery and magical healing. For seven months he remained in a coma, his body taking time to heal after the wounds. Though Balduin did indeed heal, his spirit was almost broken and he took even longer to regain that spirit. When he was finally able to walk and lead his nation once more he refused to show his scarred face, hiding his face and his entire flesh behind a mask and layers of clothing. He became weaker, eventually brought back to strength by various potions and magicks. In the years since then Balduin has sued for peace with Ethaia, to no avail, and upon returning to full strength he continues leading his nation from one glory to the next. Despite this, he rarely leads any military campaigns anymore, instead leaving that to his military commanders. Only in the most dire of circumstances does Balduin travel to war now. He focuses now on training his son to ascend to the throne.

TELL US ABOUT YOUR EQUIPMENT
When he travels into battle, and those times are getting rarer, Balduin wears light chainmail designed to afford protection without decreasing mobility too much. This chainmail covers his limbs, head and torso, his face still protected by his mask. The only weapons he carries are a small dagger, kept in a sheath at his waist, and a longsword adorned with the symbol of Thivea on the pommel. This sword is ancient but also exceptionally strong, a family heirloom.
WHAT SPELLS DO YOU KNOW?
Balduin is a skilled user of magic. His talent lies primarily with the element of fire, and he is capable of manipulating all but the largest of fires in any manner he sees fit; there are examples of him creating pillars of fire, small and large fireballs, extinguishing forest fires and so on. He also has some talent in the art of Water magic, though this extends only to the use of such magic to determine internal injuries and heal them to a degree.

I SEE. AND WHAT ABOUT YOUR HISTORY?
The history of Sibil is an extremely long one. Sibil was born on the shores of Lake Anion, a beautiful pale egg that hatched into a dragon that as magnificent even at birth. The youngest of the three in his nest, Sibil was always a serious and calm dragon even as a child, something that set him at odds with the other members of his litter. His mother always tried to play with him whilst his father was the opposite, maintaining the serious nature that he tried to instill in the other members of his litter. But they were traits only Sibil had.
As Sibil grew he began to fly with his father and siblings, scouring the lands of Thivea during the day and night. Because of the free thinking mannerisms of the people of Thivea Sibil and his family were able to travel without fear of being hunted or harmed, and there was never any fear whatsoever of being chained as a pet. This, Sibil's father stated, was the reason they had chosen to make Thivea their home. But to Sibil the lands of Ethaia always provided a source of wonder and curiosity, and it was these traits that would cause his family so much pain and suffering.
After a century of life Sibil decided to go against the instructions of his father and travel to Ethaia. It was his theory that the people of Ethaia, seeing his grandeur and splendour, would be astounded and rather than harm him, seek to welcome him. In the dead of night, when his siblings were out hunting and his parents were sleeping, Sibil took to the skies and flew the many miles, crossing the border of Thivea and eventually entering the skies of Ethaia. But there he would not find welcoming people, or the excitement and adventure he had expected.
As soon as the people of Ethaia saw a dragon flying through their skies without a rider they sought to capture it, their fear of dragons nurturing their logic. With harpoons and ropes and nets they tried to bring Sibil from the sky and the Antiqua dragon, immediately fearful, retaliated as one might expect. Despite his strength and abilities Sibil found himself out-matched as trained riders came out to assist in his capture. It was then that Sibil's family arrived. They fought valiantly, assisting in Sibil's escape, but his father and all but one of his siblings perished at the hands of the Ethaian people. Angered beyond belief, but also kept down by grief, Sibil did not return with his mother and sibling to Lake Anion. Instead he traversed the skies, attempting to negate his pain.
During a period of rest he came across a man calling himself the King of Thivea, Balduin Alexandros. A kind man, he sat with Sibil and spent many hours gaining the dragon's trust and Sibil, despite his initial thought of ripping the human's throat out, came to appreciate Balduin. The two forged a bond, there on the plains, and when it was time for Balduin to leave he promised to visit the next day. Sibil promised to be there, and for several weeks the two met and conversed regarding all things, and sometimes nothing at all. Eventually Sibil made a decision; he would visit Tharcius, where Balduin ruled from, and see if the people were really as kind as Balduin made out they were.
He found they were. People in Tharcius welcomed him and some even began arguing that the King was using him as a mount. Sibil inquired as to whether this was Balduin's true intent and the reason he had befriended him, but Balduin argued otherwise, stating that he merely found the dragon interesting and far better company than many. Surprised and pleased, Sibil took an odd step and proffered his services to Balduin as his mount, and his service to all those who would come in line after him, so long as the Balduin's kept the throne of Thivea. Also surprised and pleased, Balduin accepted, and so the tradition began.
Since then Sibil has served as the mount for every King of Thivea, even if the king has not been to his liking. He has fought in battles against Ethaia for many years and has accounted for hundreds of enemy soldiers and over a dozen dragons, though he takes no joy in killing them. King Balduin VIII was his least favourite king, a man who constantly sought war and would ride into battle whenever he could. Under his reign Sibil killed at least six dragons, one of whom he had known in youth but who had chosen to serve the General of Ethaia. Never-the-less he did his duty and fought, despite the pain and anger he felt at having to do so.
King Balduin IX, the current ruler of Thivea, is by far his favourite ruler, second only to Balduin I. A man who strives for peace and an end to the bloodshed, Balduin IX is a man who sees Sibil not as a mount but as a lifelong friend and advisor. When Balduin was wounded Sibil took it very personally, seeing it as his own failure, but he has since rallied and continues to serve the King. As Balduin now travels into battle less and less, Sibil serves more as an advisor than a mount.
INTERESTING. NOW, WHAT ABOUT YOUR SKILLS?
As an Antiqua dragon, Sibil has a variety of skills and is well-balanced in most of them. He is capable of breathing fire, and his age has only improved his speed, strength and affinity for magic. Sibil's magical abilities extend mainly to healing and protection spells, though his ability was not strong enough to fully shield Balduin from dragon's fire.
